Red Sea..

The occassion was a family trip to a beach resort near Mumbai. My cousin was walking along the shore when i captured his silhouette. I love the sunsets on any beaches. I remember when i was in Goa in 2006 i used to be at the beach especially to capture the sunset, even though everyday the clouds used to block the sun. But the changing hues in the sky and their reflecations on the great Arabian Sea keep me glued to the shore. I guess being a Mumbaikar, one automatically falls in love with the sea.
Tried to capture as much warmth in this photograph as i could. The sea acts as a lovely mirror reflecting the mood in the sky.

Ye Re Ye Re Paawsaa….

Ye Re Ye Re Paawsaa,
Tula Deto Paisa,
Paisa Zala Khota,
Paaus Aala Motha.

The title is taken from an old poem that i had heard as a kid. It invited the rains to grace us with their presence on the promise of some bribe (paisa). It so happens that the paisa is false and it rains very heavily.

The monsoon season this year has been the worst ever!! I have never in my 25 years of existence seen Mumbai so dry in the months from June to September. The photograph was captured when i had gone to one of the lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai. Saw this one drop languishing on the twig, just like the clouds loom over Mumbai at times, but the drop didnt fall, just like the rains have taken an off here.

Who is John Galt?

I had made this photograph long back. I was travelling to Mumbai from my native place and reading this book in the train. Atlas Shrugged happens to be one of my favourite books and starts off with the line which i have put in the title. Rand left me totally impressed with this one man taking on the mediocre society surrounding him. I really loved the philosophy of Objectivism which is the underlying theme of most of Rand’s writing.

The book which looks tattered and torn has an interesting story. This book belonged to a friend of mine and he was waxing eloquent about it as he was progressing through it. I said cool, i will read it once you are done. Since the spine of the book was too thick and this friend of mine wasnt really careful, it came apart, in two parts. When he finished reading the first part of the torn tome, he handed it to me while having just started to read the other part of the tome.

It so happened that i finished reading the first half before he finished the second half. I couldnt wait for him to finish the other part. So i went ahead and bought a copy for myself:))

This book has impressed me and changed my thinking process in many ways. There are some lines in the book that have stayed with me to this day. One just has to read the book with patience. Its a gem. You’ll either totally love it or totally hate it! There’s no middle path.

The Elusive Wasp

I was at the Mahim Nature park alongwith a photography club, trying to make sense out of what to shoot there. Frankly speaking, i did not find the place photogenic at all. There was dryness everywhere, plus the place had absolutely no breeze blowing which increased the sun’s proclivity to irritate me.

The only respite were these wasps that were all around, only difficulty being, they were not very co-operative. The compound eyes make their sense of sight all the more sharp. It was challenging to capture them in focus. I made many attempts and was successful at some, but failed most of the times. Anyways good learning.

Untitled

I have been amazingly lazy in putting up any photographs here. The stats on the right make me cringe. Haven’t had any satisfactory shootout in the last couple of months, so i really have nothing new to showcase. So going back to my stock footage.

This photograph was taken last year when i had embarked on a solo voyage to Uttaranchal. Have thousands of photographs from that journey, and i had even thought of creating a travelogue. But i kept procrastrinating and it has been a year since. Sad! The worst part is, i had even written the travelogues, all i had to do was arrange the photographs and text accordingly, but lazy me.

This photograph is the road leading up to Ghangria, which happens to be a base point for tourists who want to visit the enchanting Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. I chose this photograph now because the photograph has a path that is winding and somehow finding its was amidst the houses and the slope. Life at present is at one such turning point, where i have to find my way through it. With two months left for my internship to end, the feeling of apprehension is taking over slowly but surely.

An Engineering Marvel – The Bandra Worli Sea Link

Mumbai finally got its much awaited Bandra Worli Sea Link on 1st July 2009 when it was opened for the public. This Rs 400 cr bridge was finally made at a stagerring cost of Rs 1620 crore!
This is just one part of the link that will connect Bandra all the way to Nariman Point. It is one of the most complicated structures to have been constructed in India in many years. 38000 KM Long Steel Ropes, 575000 tonnes of Concrete & 6000 Workers, went into making this grand link.
I got an opportunity to visit the sea link on 23rd June as a part of a media contingent. The mood in the sky couldnt have been better. It was also the first day it rained in Mumbai. Couldnt have asked for a better day. There was absolutely no one on the link that day. The last photograph is one of a kind, cant even imagine clicking such a shot now:P
I’ve kept the photographs in BW as there wasnt much color anyway. Enjoy!

Peek – A – Boo

No – This is not the Bandra Worli Sealink bridge.
Made this photograph when i was exploring Kolkata on my own one day. The idea was to see the Princep Memorial, but i was in for a surprise when i saw the fabulous Vidyasagar Setu (which also i wanted to see) was just in the background. This bridge is popularly known as the second Hooghly Bridge. The Vidyasagar Setu is a cable stayed bridge, with a main span of a little over 457 metres, and a deck 35 metres wide. Construction started in 1978 and the bridge was finally inaguarated on the 10th of October, 1992.
Was noticing the columns of the Princep Memorial when i noticed that i could frame the bridge in the background in two columns. The result is this pseudo silhouette shot.
With the Bandra Worli Sea Link opening up operations next week, i thought of putting up this photograph.

Mumbai Washes its clothes here!!

Dhobi Ghat, off the Mahalaxmi station is a photographers paradise. The place is bubbling with unabashed energy, specially in the morning, when the washermen are at their docks washing away the dirt from the clothes that Mumbaikars wear. These are just a few of the photographs i clicked there.

Standing Strong

Kolkata conversations make me quite nostalgic. Having spent the maximum time away from home there, the place has a special spot in my heart. This is another one of those photographs of the monument which is synonymous with Kolkata after ofcourse, Howrah Bridge:) The entire garden surrounding Victoria Memorial gives one so many different angles and styles to shoot the monument. Luckily this particular strech of flowers was quite close to the lake wherein i could catch the reflection.
