Portrait 15: The potter and his creation


Kumbharwada or Potter’s colony in Dharavi is one place you will find more earthen pots, diyas, containers than people. The layout of the houses in the Kumbharwada is around fire kilns which are used to dry the pots after they have been kept out in the sun for a couple of days. It is not surprising to find a lot of elderly potters still creating working the clay into everyday objects such as this water container.

Portraits 10: Perfume Chacha part deux

The perfume sellers lining the Bhendi Bazaar – Mohammed Ali road stretch are a joy to photograph as not only is your sense of sight bombarded with such colourful displays but also the sense of smell reaches heavenly levels thanks to the magical fragrant potions hidden within those shops.
The original Perfume chacha that gave me a push to carry on this series.

Portraits 7: The nameless baba

I was shooting along the banks of the Ganga at Rishikesh, when i heard someone calling me. I turned around to find this dreadlocks-sporting baba. He first made the sign of a chillum, asking if i had any. I smiled and said no. He smiled back.

I then went ahead and started talking to him. He seemed to be sober, for a change. We had a good 15-minute conversation and to date i can’t remember his name, but i still remember the conversation. This was probably my first ever attempt at a street portrait as i had just bought my Canon S5 IS back then.
He told me that he along with a group of other Shiv-bhakt babas stayed around the banks of the Ganga in Rishikesh and their main aim in life was to practise Shaivism, meditate and lead a nomadic life. He said he had lead this kind of lifestyle for close to 15 years.

“How do you manage your meals then?” i asked. He replied that they completely relied on bhiksha. In a tourist-friendly town such as Rishikesh, there is an abundance of bhiksha and food for people like him. They have very few belongings and would sleep, bathe and smoke chillum along the ghats of the Ganga. There are some sort of open quarters around the Ganga at Rishikesh where a lot of these godmen stay and sleep.
I asked him if he only stayed in Rishikesh or does he move around, to which he said, “Jab garmi badh jaati hai, to hum pahadon me jaate hai. Uttarakhand ya Himachal. Ek hi jagah nahi rehte.” (When the heat increases, we take off to the hills. We keep moving around in Uttarakhand or Himachal but do not stay fixed at any one place).

I did not have the heart to ask him anything about his past or his family. So i took my leave and requested if i could click his picture. He agreed.

Whenever i look at those peering eyes, i am instantly transferred back to Rishikesh. What a lovely place that is!

Framing the framers!


I had already stopped bothering with clicking the art installations at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival since last year, for the simple reason that people never stop posing beside the installations. And I hate to make images where the art installation is peppered with people. Last year, i missed out on making some candid shots. This year though i went ahead and decided to explore this aspect. 



Considering there is an unhealthy number of people with DSLRs ready to make images, i thought of just shooting people shooting whatever it is that they were shooting. As with my street photography, none of the shots involved taking prior permission, as that would not give me the required zen-like expressions that most of us have while composing frames. 

I just decided to go with the flow, and wait till i was able to make a frame which had another person in it, making his or her own frame. And i thouroughly enjoyed shooting at the fest this year, more than last year. 

Presenting on this blog some of those images i made during the first weekend of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2012. I made liberal use of the Color Creative – Yesteryear 2 preset from the ones offered by Adobe Lightroom, to five these photographs a warm feel.
