Gandhi Room!

Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad, was the place where Gandhiji resided before he entered into the Indian Political Scene. Its located along the river Sabarmati. It was here that Mahatma Gandhi spent his years before entering fulltime into Indian Politics.

Simplicity is the theme throughout the Sabarmati Ashram. This picture depicts the room of Mahatma Gandhi. As can be seen, the Mahatma was as simple as anyone could get. It comprises of his symbolic Charkha, and his wooden stick and his writing desk.

It was under such simple conditions that Mahatma Gandhi laid the foundation for a type of protest that was going to change the face of the world. Satyagraha and Ahimsa. Two philosophies that are to date followed not only in India, but many other countries as well.
It was in whilst his stay in Sabarmati Ashram that Gandhiji went on the famous Dandi March, 1930, protesting against the British Salt Tax.

Sabarmati Ashram presently houses a Gandhi Museum, and has a library based on Gandhian Philosophy.

Regarding the picture : i wanted to capture the old world mood, so i did it in BW and added noise to give it that old worn out look. The vignetting was done to add more frame to the the elements in the room.

Banana Leaf!

I have never quite been an observer of the things around me. That was till i started being obsessed with Photography. Now i can safely say that my perspective of looking at things has changed. Initially, i would always try to see the big picture and never gave any importance to small details. This attitude changed over time, as i experimented with my lens.

Seen in the above picture is a simple banana leaf, with a few drops of water on it. It was clicked when id been trekking near this place called Peb, near Matheran (more on that later:P). Banana trees are in abundance, under normal circumstances i wouldnt have bothered even looking at the trees, but with my camera around, i am a different person, observation wise:D The slight drizzle had created a pattern on the already patterned banana leaf. As the size of the leaf is huge, so clicking it wasnt a big deal. The crests and troughs create a kind of light-shadow effect, and the drops of water add drama to the otherwise boring leaf.

Rickshaw Wala!

I had clicked this picture on the streets of Kolkata whilst i was jaywalking. Hand-pulled rickshaws are still very common in Kolkata. It is sad in a way to see humans being made to do such kind of jobs. Whats even more saddening is that the people who pull these rickshaws are quite elderly.

To ban or not to ban this mode of transport has always been a matter of debate. On the positive side we wont have to witness elderly men pulling these rickshaws barefoot come rain or sunshine. But on the other hand, what other job should these rickshaw pullers look out for?? As far as i have learned from my experience in the city, these rickshaw-pullers come from very very poor families, where they are probably the only earning members.

Pride of Konkan!

Coconut trees can be found lining all the villages in and around Konkan. Apart from the obvious use of the tree for coconuts, the other parts of the tree are also used.
Clicked this picture from underneath the coconut tree that hangs above the well of my ancestral home.

Photography and Travel – A Symbiotic Relationship!

Travel has always been my passion since i dont know when. The place dosent matter. Company dosent matter. Climate dosent matter. I can very well take off on my own on a heavy rainy day in Mumbai or for that matter jaywalk to death at my home away from home, Kolkata:D Over the years i have realised that travelling has nothing to with taking off to the hill stations on your holidays. Travel, according to me is, exploring new avenues, learning new things, Jaywalking:d, in short exposing yourself to new things. Walking is a prime aspect of travelling. I mean i know we have bikes, cars etc, but the joy experienced by exploring places on foot is second to none.

Photography was neither a passion nor a hobby, couple of years back. Digital Camera was just an alibi to capture moments from college as i felt the 36-picture, no zoom Yashica camera that i had couldnt really do justice to my last few days in engg college. After having passed so much time with my camera during my travels within Mumbai as well as outside it, i can safely say that my travelling and love for photography are interlinked, and its impossible for me to visualise one without the other.

Travel is ofcourse primary, but many a times it has so happened that i have gone to a place to Photograph certain aspect of the place and discovered a completely new, a completely different aspect of the same place. Many a times just the itch to release the shutter button has prodded me on to travel to unknown exotic places.

The thing i love best bout both of my above passions is that it kinda detaches me from the present and takes my mind off stuff, so that i can concentrate completely on the travel part and devise new photographic angles and strategies. With every new travel itinery i undertake, i not only fulfill my two passions but also end up learning a little bit more bout photography. And it just confirms my belief in the notion that stuff thats self taught cant be forgotten easily. It stays on with you.

Through the rods!!

Mumbai skyline has been done to death in many pictures. I tried to capture the same through a different perspective. After having traversed from Marine Lines to Girgaum Chowpatty i was tired, but from Chowpatty i saw a view point up in the hills of Walkeshwar which i thought would give me a great panorama of the beach from a height. Onwards to the road, i thought of relaxing near the memorial there. I dnt exactly remember what it was. In front of me were the rods through which all the buildings along Nariman Point and Marine Lines were visible. I thought of composing the image through the rods of the barricade. the result divides the picture into two halves, the upper half showcasing Point in its grandeur and the lower half showing dirty shore of the beach. Mumbai in its two prominent avatars!

Bliss on the beach!!

Evening time at the beach is a visual treat. The cool quotient in the above picture can be attributed to the fact that i had used a Tungsten Filter in my camera. The empty beach somehow added to the beauty of the whole scene.

Sundown @ Calangute!!

Sun, sand, sea and the clouds are my favourite subjects, as they always form patterns that are just present for that moment only. One cant have the same pattern at any other moment. Thats what i love about these subjects. In this picture i tried capturing the evening just before the sun was about to set. The shape of the cloud attracted me more towards capturing this moment, before it passed. Looked like dragon was out on parole above the Calangute skies.

Steps!!

This photograph features the steps at the famed Davis Sassoon Library. Clicked it when i had been there during the Kala Ghoda Art fest. The special thing about this picture is that i have tried clicking it by actually coming at the level of the first step thats visible. i liked the end result. So far i just used to click with the camera held at my eye level. With this picture i have decided to try out different angular clicks. Keep learning new things everyday with my camera. Keeps those brain cells active:D
