High fliers

Enroute to Alibaug on the ferry, these seagulls quickly start following you as soon as the ferry starts its journey. They are scouring for food which the ferry passengers are only too happy to share. They seagulls did get very close and i got a lot of shots, but i really like this one in particular. Beautiful form, short textured wingspan, gliding through the air. You cannot help wishing that you could also fly like these birds.

Will the real Kala Ghoda please stand up?

You may have come across a lot of posts on this blog mentioning Kala Ghoda, thanks to the art fest that happens there every year. A lot of my friends wonder why the area is called so, despite there being no Kala Ghoda or black horse (the painting of a black horse on one of the buildings in that area doesn’t count) anywhere in the premise. Time for a history lesson:)

The Kala Ghoda district is called so because there actually was a metal statue of the King Edward VII on his black horse which was installed in now parking lot area, opposite Jehangir Art Gallery. Jewish businessman David Sassoon (yeah, the library named after the same person is right across the street) was the person who got the statue built. The statue was moved from there in 1965 to Rani Baug, but the name of the art district has stuck.

This image was made while i was strolling through Rani Baug on a drizzly day.

Drops

It’s that time of the year again, when the chill in the air, the fragrance of wet earth, uncertainty of transportation, greenery all around is unmatched. Also a time of the year, when my observations through my camera’s view finder, get a much needed boost. Water drops never look as inviting and demanding to be captured, ever.
Just a matter of time before i resume trekking in the Sahyadris. Can’t wait to capture more drenched cobwebs and more water drops hanging on the edge:)

In the shadows..

This is my second attempt at photographing a live concert and i have realised that I have miles to go in this genre. The energy around you in a live concert is unmatched and i have found photographing under such an atmosphere to be quite addictive. This was made at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival this year. Prem Joshua and Band had the crowd engrossed in their fusion music and it was a sheer joy to shoot with great music in the background. Hope to get more closer next year round:P

I wasn’t a great fan of concert photography till i read up an article on a book by Raghu Rai, one of the greatest photographers in India. That is when i came to understand the addiction behind photographing performing artists. Raghu Rai has done extensive work as far as shooting Indian classical music maestros goes. It has been compiled in the wonderful book India’s Great Masters. You can see the artist in their element in Rai’s work. Be it Pandit Ravi Shankar or the late Bhimsen Joshi or Kishori Amonkar. You realise the true significance of his quote where Rai says that it takes hours to capture an artist the way he or she should be, in their most intense moments.

Escaliers

Spiral staircases always take me back in time: games of hide and seek; horror stories of what lies at the end of the staircase and more often, they bring up a visual from the classic Robert Louis Stevenson book – ‘Kidnapped’, where a character is climbing the staircases and suddenly lightning strikes and shows the protagonist that there are no more stairs leading up staircase – it’s a trap. Spiral staircases just conjure up stories with nasty endings for me:P

Duality

The architecture around South Mumbai always fascinates me and I love to get lost among these old buildings. When I am not busy getting lost, i try to interpret them in as many ways as i can. Now if only i got a chance to shoot within these beautiful monuments, i would get to learn so much. There is something inherently attractive about the history behind these old structures. Abandoned places are the only other spaces that attract me as much, specially the defunct Mills around my locality. Hope to be able to shoot them someday. Till then, South Mumbai old architecture is where i will quench my thirst.

A Self Portrait

I’m a huge fan of reflection. Have explored it on the blog in Walking Tall , You Are Not Alone, Victoria Memorial Reflections 1 and 2 and so on. This time thought of attempting self portraiture. The place, ah well, I’ll let that remain a secret for some time now.
